What makes a password strong

Length matters most. Every extra character multiplies the number of guesses an attacker needs. A random 16-character password using upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols would take longer than any realistic attack to crack by brute force.

Passwords here are made with your browser's cryptographic random number generator and never leave your device. Nothing is sent to a server or saved.

Good password habits

Use a different password for every account, store them in a password manager, and turn on two-factor authentication wherever it's offered. A strong password reused across sites is only as safe as the weakest site.

Questions people ask

Is this password generator safe?

Yes. Passwords are created in your browser using its cryptographic random number generator. They're never transmitted or stored.

How long should a password be?

At least 12 characters, and 16 or more for important accounts like email and banking.

Should I include symbols?

Symbols increase strength, but length matters more. If a site rejects symbols, make the password longer instead.

What does avoid look-alikes mean?

It removes characters that are easy to confuse, such as the letter O and the number 0, which helps when you need to type a password by hand.
