How the final grade formula works

Your final grade is a weighted average: your current grade counts for everything except the final, and the final exam counts for its weight. To find the score you need, the calculator uses: required score = (target grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight.

For example, with a current grade of 82%, a final worth 30% and a target of 85%, you need (85 − 82 × 0.7) ÷ 0.3 = 92% on the final.

Reading the result

A required score above 100% means the target can't be reached through the final alone, unless there's extra credit. A score of 0% or below means you've already secured that grade.

Questions people ask

What do I need on my final to pass?

Enter your current grade, the final's weight and your passing mark (often 60% or 70%) as the grade you want. The answer is the minimum score you need.

How do I find my final exam weight?

Check your course syllabus or grading breakdown. It's usually listed as a percentage, such as 20%, 30% or 40%.

What if the answer is over 100%?

The target grade isn't reachable on the final alone. Ask about extra credit, or aim for the next grade down.

Does this work for weighted categories?

Yes, as long as your current grade already reflects all the weighted work done so far.
